Projects
If you ask a resident in any of the poor villages across the globe,
“what do you need for a better life?” you’d likely get a range of
answers from better education, to clean water, or perhaps simply ‘food.’
The specific answer is important but perhaps more significantly, the
villager can pinpoint exactly what the village needs. This shouldn’t be
surprising because to that person this isn’t an abstract question but a
harsh reality he or she lives and breathes each day. Faced with daily
problems such as poverty, malnutrition, HIV/AIDS, or lack of education
the villagers clearly understand their plight but lack the resources to
free themselves from the cycle of impoverishment.
At GlobalSoul International we firmly believe each community is its own
greatest asset for improvement if given the necessary resources to
unlock that potential. Each situation is unique and what works in one
area may not be the proper course of action for another. Given the
complex set of social, cultural, political, religious, legal, and
environmental considerations in every situation, the local community
uniquely understand its obstacles and therefore uniquely able to find
solutions to overcome those obstacles. By providing a mix of
education, training, and access to microloans, GlobalSoul International
does not simply give aid but empowers communities to achieve sustainable
development and hopefully, a better life.
Current Projects:
GlobalSoul International is currently raising funds for the following projects.
Global Citizens of Tomorrow School Project - Kpegnon, Togo
Project Lead: Koffi Djagba
The village of Kpegnon, Notse (Togo) lacks the adequate infrastructure to sustain the educational needs for the global citizens of tomorrow. Under severe rains and heavy winds, students are often forced to vacate their classrooms. Most of the students are barefoot and come from miles away to attend classes in the village of Kpegnon and often lack the financial means to afford lunch during their school day. Last year, with the help of people like you, we were able to secure their lunches with your generous donations. This year we hope to do much more. In conjunction with the villagers of Kpengnon, we have secured land which will serve as the site for the building of four classrooms. Now we are collecting donations for the construction of the four classrooms. We need to raise $19,540 to make it happen! Your donation counts!

Footsteps to Healing - OHSU/Gimbie Collaboration – Gimbie, Ethiopia
Project Lead: Project Lead: Dr. Rahel Nardos and Dr. Renee Edwards

This project focuses on improving women’s health and decreasing maternal
morbidity and mortality through health care provision and local
capacity building in rural Ethiopia. Lack of trained health providers in
rural Ethiopia contributes to alarmingly high maternal mortality and
morbidity from preventable causes such as postpartum hemorrhage,
infection, hypertensive diseases of pregnancy and obstructed labor.
Donations will support collaboration between Gimbie Adventist Hospital
(GAH) and Oregon Health and Science University to provide training to
Ethiopian providers in the areas of safe pregnancy and delivery,
management of obstetric emergencies, gynecologic surgery and family
planning. The sustainable partnership includes work with GAH College of
Health Sciences to assist in formal educational training of nurses and
midwives, collaborative improvement of clinical practice and research,
and provision of training in gynecologic surgery technique especially in
the management of uterovaginal prolapse and obstetric fistula. In
giving please consider that a gift of $175 covers the cost of prolapse
surgery, hospitalization and postsurgical care for one woman.

Female Menstruation Hygiene Improvement – Ghana

Help the Women of the Aowim-Suaman District of Western Ghana improve
their health by providing access to much needed sanitary menstruation
supplies. This project combines public health improvement with economic
development to ensure sustainable benefits for years to come. Run in
conjunction with the Women and Youth Forum for Sustainable Development,
this project will provide education to young women in regards to
menstruation management, hygiene kits, and sewing machines to produce
and sell reusable pads providing access to sanitary menstruation
supplies and a sustainable source of income.
Project Update!
Thanks to your donations the first phase of the project is underway. In
January, 2009 the Ghana women\'s group purchased four sewing machines,
scissors, tape measures, thread and materials to start their cottage

Elementary School Exchange Program
Education is the key to a brighter future. This program pairs a
school in Ethiopia with one in Salt Lake City to allow each child to
make a friend half-way across the globe. The program also raises money
for the Ethiopia school to provide pens, pencils, paper, and other basic

Footsteps to Healing – Mota, Ethiopia
Project Lead: Project Lead: Joni Kabana
Lack of access to obstetrical services can lead to devastating
complications in childbirth for women in rural Ethiopia. Problems such
as post-partum hemorrhage, eclamptic seizures, intra-partum fetal death,
obstetrical fistula and maternal death are rare in the developed world,
but not uncommon in Ethiopia where only 6 % of births are attended to
by trained health care personnel. In January we are sending a team of
physicians and nurses to a rural hospital in Mota, Ethiopia to help set
up and document obstetrical services in this remote town. The goal is
to send out teams of health care providers on a rotating basis to
provide care and train the local health officers and midwives.
